A care worker named locally as Stephen Nicholson remains in custody at Southampton Police station and has been grilled by officers from Hampshire Police major crime team after a thirteen-year-old Southampton teenager failed to return home on Thursday evening.

Lucy McHugh also known as Lucy White’s body was found in woodland at the Sports Centre at 7.45am on Thursday 26 July by a dog walker who raised the alarm. Officers remain at the property carrying out searches who he shares with Lucy Mum and her partner.
It is understood that the care worker also works for a care company in Totton and befriend the mum after the pair worked together and he needed somewhere to live after being thrown out of the family home.

Lucy’s Mum took to social media appealing for anyone to contact her after her daughter failed to return home after going missing on Thursday just after 9am.

A man has been arrested in connection with the death of the 13-year-old girl in Southampton.

Lucy McHugh’s body was found in woodland at the Sports Centre at 7.45am on Thursday 26 July.

Detective Superintendent Paul Barton said:

“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts go out to Lucy’s family and friends at this terrible time.

“We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of her death and are asking for the public’s help.

“We know Lucy left her house in Mansel Road East at 9.30am on Wednesday 25 July and did not return home that evening as expected. Police have also been carrying out searches at the sister’s on the same road of the man arrestted.

“She was reported to police that night as a missing person and an investigation commenced.

“Sadly Lucy was found the following morning by a member of the public.

“We’re really keen to know what she did after leaving her house and would ask that anyone who saw her, had contact with her or knows of her movements on Wednesday contacts the incident room.”

Lucy was last seen wearing a distinctive black jacket with white sleeves, the logo for the band Falling in Reverse on the front and RADKE 01 in red on the back.
