Police say they have charged 41-year-old Ben Ord with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving after a man and woman in their 70s died.
The charge result following a traffic collision when their car was hit by a rental van which was being pursued by police on Footscray Road in Eltham just after midnight on Friday.
At approximately midnight on Saturday, 23 February police officers on patrol noted a van being driven erratically at speed.
Officers in a patrol car followed the Ford Transit van and requested for it to stop. However, the van failed to stop for the officers.
At approximately 00.06hrs, the van was in collision with a Citroen C3 car on Footscray Road, Eltham.
The London Ambulance Service (LAS) and London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called to the scene.
Despite the efforts of emergency services, the male and female occupants of the car, both believed to be aged in their 70s, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Their next of kin have been informed.
The driver of the van has been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the alcohol limit, driving while unfit through drugs and death by dangerous driving. He was then taken to hospital.
The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed as a matter of routine and a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
