A serving soldier has been arrested after two teenage girls died after being struck by a car while running.

The crash happened on Queen’s Avenue in Aldershot, Hampshire, just after 7.10pm on Tuesday 8th November. Police said the girls were hit by a black Ford Focus.

It is understood that they were members of Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletic Club (AFD).

Police said the 24-year-old remains in police custody. Nobody else was injured.

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that a fatal road traffic collision occurred in Aldershot Garrison and that a solider is currently being held by Hampshire Police.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”

Specialist officers are providing support to the teenagers’ families.

Queen’s Avenue was closed for several hours, police said.

Dozens of tributes have been left on social networking websites.

Julia Blomquist said,“ I woke up to the horrific news this morning which I was hoping wouldn’t be true after hearing about it last night that two young girls from AFD (Aldershot Farnham & District Running Club) were killed last night at the club whilst crossing the road from the stadium. It’s brought me to tears already.

“They were doing something they loved and that was once me doing exactly the same thing. It’s incredibly shocking and heartbreaking. My heart and thoughts go out to the parents, friends and club members. It’s a horrible loss and a tragic incident. RIP beautiful angels “

Manager of the club popular club, Allan Leiper, said, “As joint Team Manager of Aldershot Farnham and District Athletics Club it so sad to hear the news about the tragic event outside AFD’s training facilities last night in Aldershot. My thoughts go out to the two girls involved and to their families at this very sad time. These girls were only following their dreams to be the best runners in the best running club in the world. Rest in peace girls.”
