Police have arrested a local 20-year-old man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm following the discovery of a man with serious, life-threatening injuries in Newport during the early hours of this morning.
The victim of what Police believe to be a serious assault, a 49-year-old man from Newport, remains in a critical and life-threatening condition in Southampton General Hospital after being airlift from the Island in the early hours of the morning
Officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police have spent the day examining the scene. St James Street was cordon off just after 4am this morning. Police where called to a man who had collapsed in the middle of the road. Police have revealed this afternoon that a 20 year old man from the Isle of Wight has been arrested and was being quested at Newport Police by detectives
Officers are still appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or has any information, to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 101 quoting incident 44160066009
