one armed driver jailed by isle of wight court after high speed chases around the island

An Isle of Wight man who only has one armed has been jailed by a judge for 11 months. Described in court as reckless but not harmless 24-year-old Joe ‘Joey’ Baker from Ryde led officers on two high speed high-speed Police pursuits through the streets of Ryde and Newport – despite him only having 1 arm.

Baker who appeared by at the Isle of Wight Crown court this week pleaded guilty to a string of offences including dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, failing to surrender and driving without insurance

Baker took Police on a pursuit through Pan estate on Sunday 17th June after he made off from them in a green Ford Focus. Following a high-speed chase thinking he’d lost officers he made off on foot. Officers placed a road on locked and surrounded rear gardens he was then arrested and take away in a police van.

Less than a month later a large scale search involving the Police helicopter was launched in Ryde when Joe Baker failed to stop for Police and took officers on yet another pursuit. This time, he nearly slammed into a Police car whilst driving on Smallbrook Lane. The vehicle Baker was driving – a Hyundai Coupe – was eventually found dumped on Sutton Close, Oakfield but he had already fled the scene.

Baker’s defence team told the court that he knows he was ‘extremely stupid’ and that he was remorseful for his actions. Having been born without a lower left arm, Baker’s driving offences are said to have begun as a way of proving he can do what an able-bodied person can do. The court was also told of a recent miscarriage and a diagnosis of cancer in the family.

Baker, who is also known by 12 other aliases, has been sentenced to 11 months in prison and has also been banned from driving for almost 2-and-a-half years.
