Bethnal Green, Shooting Sparks Murder Probe

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was shot dead in a park in Bethnal Green.

Metropolitan Police were called to Weavers Fields on Wilmot Street at 8.27pm on Tuesday (August 6) following reports of a man in his early 30s being shot. Despite the swift response of emergency services, including London’s Air Ambulance, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

This incident has triggered a murder investigation, marking the second such probe in less than two days in the area. On Monday (August 5), a man named by police as Abdul Jalloh, 23, was fatally stabbed in New Union Close. One man has been arrested in connection with Jalloh’s death.

Vicky Tunstall, acting Detective Chief Superintendent for Tower Hamlets and Hackney, commented on the recent violence: “Tragically, another young man has lost his life to violence and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time. Tackling violent crime remains our absolute focus, but we need to work together with communities to achieve this.

The victim of the shooting has not yet been formally identified, but detectives believe they know his identity and have informed his family. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted in due course to determine the exact cause of death. The Metropolitan Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101, quoting reference CAD 7454/06Aug. The public can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously to provide information that could assist the investigation.
