Originally slated for completion by June 1st, 2024, the installation and commissioning of the new security technology were necessitated by evolving regulatory requirements concerning the screening of electrical items and liquids in hand luggage. Despite the challenges posed by the aviation industry’s pandemic-induced slowdown, Birmingham Airport remained steadfast in its commitment to meeting the revised deadline.

Rather than merely replacing existing technology, Birmingham Airport opted for a forward-thinking approach, constructing a larger security area to accommodate projected passenger growth. Over an 18-month period beginning in January 2022, the airport undertook a comprehensive planning, procurement, and construction process, investing £60 million in privately financed funds to build a state-of-the-art security screening hall.

After months of diligent effort, Birmingham Airport achieved a significant milestone by inaugurating its new security screening area in mid-March, well ahead of the June deadline. Despite encountering some challenges during the transition period, including occasional lapses in customer service, the airport’s dedicated team ensured a smooth transition and the seamless operation of the new facility.

In May, the transition of security officers to the revamped security search area was finalized, marking a pivotal moment in Birmingham Airport’s modernization efforts. The newly implemented technology offers passengers a simplified and streamlined screening experience, eliminating the need to remove liquids of up to 100ml from hand luggage or segregate them into separate bags. Similarly, electrical items can now remain in passengers’ hand luggage, facilitating a hassle-free journey through security checkpoints.

However, due to pending regulatory approval beyond the airport’s control, passengers are currently limited to carrying liquids up to 100ml in their hand luggage, despite the anticipated allowance of up to 2 liters. Al Titterington, Terminal Operations Director of Birmingham Airport, emphasized the airport’s readiness to implement the new liquid allowance once regulatory approval is secured.
