BMW M Motorsport Returns to Le Mans: A Spectacular Racing Week

BMW M Motorsport is gearing up for an exhilarating racing week at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. With the slogan “BMW M is back at Le Mans,” the brand celebrates its return to the top category exactly 25 years after the victory of the BMW V12 LMR. Let’s dive into the exciting details:

Hypercar Class: BMW M Hybrid V8 Takes the Stage

  • The BMW M Hybrid V8, competing in the Hypercar class, marks a significant milestone. This cutting-edge hybrid racer combines performance and efficiency.
  • The #20 BMW M Hybrid V8, also known as the 20th BMW Art Car, is a masterpiece designed by renowned artist Julie Mehretu. Its unveiling at the Centre Pompidou in Paris captivated art and racing enthusiasts alike.
  • The Hypercar category features intense competition, with 23 cars from nine manufacturers vying for victory. BMW M Team WRT and six works drivers, including Raffaele Marciello, Dries Vanthoor, and Marco Wittmann, will battle it out.

LMGT3 Class: BMW M4 GT3s Aim for Glory

  • In the LMGT3 class, Team WRT fields two BMW M4 GT3s, each sporting a fresh livery.
  • The #31 BMW M4 GT3, driven by the winners of the 6 Hours of Imola (ITA), Augusto Farfus, Sean Gelael, and Darren Leung, aims for the podium.
  • Sharing the cockpit of the #46 car are Maxime Martin, Valentino Rossi, and Ahmad Al Harthy.

Celebrating BMW’s Le Mans Legacy

  • As BMW returns to the top class after 25 years, fans can admire legendary vehicles. The BMW V12 LMR, victorious in 1999, and the iconic BMW 3.0 CSL Art Car by Alexander Calder (1975) evoke nostalgia.
  • BMW’s Le Mans history dates back to 1939 when the BMW 328 Touring Coupé clinched victory in its class.
  • The BMW Art Cars, conceived by Jochen Neerpasch and Hervé Poulain, became iconic. Notable examples include Frank Stella’s BMW 3.0 CSL (1976), Roy Lichtenstein’s BMW 320i Turbo (1977), and Andy Warhol’s BMW M1 (1979).
  • Jenny Holzer’s BMW V12 LMR (1999) and Jeff Koons’ BMW M3 GT2 (2010) also graced the Le Mans circuit.

Triumphs of the Past

  • BMW M Motorsport’s golden era was the 1990s. Yannick Dalmas, Pierluigi Martini, and Joachim Winkelhock secured overall victory in the #15 BMW V12 LMR in 1999.
  • Earlier, the BMW McLaren F1 GTR (powered by a BMW engine) triumphed in 1995.
  • Recent Le Mans campaigns featured the BMW M8 GTE in 2018 and 2019.

Stay tuned for an unforgettable Le Mans week as BMW M Motorsport revs up for glory!
