This marks the first issuance of banknotes featuring the portrait of King Charles III, with the monarch’s image set to grace existing designs of all denominations (£5, £10, £20, and £50). The Bank clarified that aside from the portrait change, there will be no alterations to the existing designs.

Unveiled in December 2022, images of the new banknotes showcase King Charles III’s portrait on the front, along with a cameo appearance in the see-through security window. However, the reverse side of each note will remain unchanged from the current series.

The existing series of banknotes features notable figures such as Sir Winston Churchill on the £5, Jane Austen on the £10, JMW Turner on the £20, and Alan Turing on the £50.

The Bank of England will provide avenues for individuals to exchange Queen Elizabeth II banknotes for King Charles banknotes, with further details on this process expected to be released closer to the launch date.

Coins featuring the official effigy of King Charles III began circulating in post offices across the UK from December 2022. The issuance of the new banknotes marks another milestone in the transition to depicting the reigning monarch on the nation’s currency, continuing a tradition that dates back decades.
