Car Crashes Through Fence Near Live Electric Railway Line on Isle of Sheppey

A car crash in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey narrowly avoided disaster after a silver Volvo careened through a metal fence and came to rest just feet from a live electric railway line. The incident occurred around 1:30 pm near the main line serving Sheerness.

Police are currently controlling traffic on Brielle Way, the main route for vehicles and car carriers heading to Sheerness Docks. Recovery efforts for the Volvo are expected to begin around 6:00 pm this evening.

Despite the dramatic nature of the crash, Southeastern confirmed that rail services have not been affected. Network Rail engineers are on-site to ensure the integrity and safety of the railway line.

Emergency Response

A spokesman for British Transport Police provided details about the incident: “We were called to the line at Brielle Way, Sheerness, at around 1:45 pm today following reports that a car had gone through the fences alongside the railway line. Officers attended, alongside colleagues from Kent Fire and Rescue, and the vehicle was recovered from the side of the tracks. The driver was checked over by paramedics.”

The quick response from emergency services helped prevent any potential escalation of the incident. Kent Fire and Rescue personnel, alongside British Transport Police officers, ensured the scene was secured and the vehicle safely removed from the precarious position.

Traffic and Safety Measures

As police manage the flow of traffic on Brielle Way, drivers are advised to expect delays and plan alternative routes if possible. The road is a critical artery for the local transport infrastructure, particularly for those accessing Sheerness Docks.

Network Rail engineers will remain on site to conduct a thorough inspection of the railway line and surrounding area to guarantee there are no lasting impacts from the crash.

Public Reassurance

Residents and commuters in Sheerness can be reassured that all necessary precautions are being taken to maintain safety. Southeastern and Network Rail are working closely with local authorities to monitor the situation and ensure minimal disruption to rail services.
