Claw Hammer wielding Armed Robber Jailed

An armed robber who targeted shops in Chatham and Whitstable while wielding a claw hammer has been jailed for six years. Charlie Elliot, 35, of no fixed address was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday 25 May 2018. Elliot pleaded guilty to three counts of robbery and two counts of possessing an offensive weapon. The first robbery took place at a convenience store in Watling Street, Chatham on Sunday 15 April at around 10pm. Dressed in dark clothing, white gloves and a balaclava he jumped over the counter armed with the hammer and helped himself to cash from the till. On Tuesday 24 April at around 11pm he entered another shop in Churchill Avenue, Chatham, this time with a scarf covering his face. His victim was left terrified after being threatened by Elliot who stole several hundred pounds before leaving the shop. Wearing exactly the same clothes he then robbed a shop in Canterbury Road, Whitstable on Wednesday 25 April just after 10pm. One man was hit across the back with the hammer when he, along with another man, challenged Elliot and wrestled him out of the store. Elliot was detained until Kent Police officers arrived to arrest him. The hammer was seized and following a review of CCTV he was linked to all three incidents. Investigating officer Detective Constable Kerry Whiting said: ‘Elliot has shown he is a dangerous man who will put lives at risk without a second thought. ‘This was a very frightening ordeal for his victims and we are extremely grateful to the two men who put themselves in danger to restrain him. ‘Thankfully his actions did not result in serious injuries, however these violent crimes can have a lasting impact on victims and no one should suffer at the hands of thieves like Elliot. ‘He will now serve time in prison where he can no longer pose a threat to the public.’
