A dangerous driver has been sentenced to over nine years in prison after causing a fatal crash on the M27 that claimed the life of a lorry driver.
Ross Neiland, 38, from Littlehampton, was traveling at speeds exceeding 90mph in hazardous weather conditions when he lost control of his Volkswagen Polo near Junction 5 on February 21, 2024. The collision caused a lorry driven by Michal Kaminski, 36, of Salisbury, to veer off the road and crash into the support of an overhead gantry before bursting into flames.
Kaminski was pronounced dead at the scene, and the motorway remained closed for two days for investigations and repairs.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
At Southampton Crown Court today, Neiland was sentenced to nine years and nine months in prison. He was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving, causing death while uninsured, causing death while unlicensed, and failing to allow a blood sample to be analyzed. He was also banned from driving for an extended period following his release.
Neiland, who attempted to flee the scene, was apprehended by members of the public near the crash site. Police discovered stolen goods in his possession, including shoplifted items such as meat, cheese, and laundry detergent.

Michal Kaminski, a professional driver, was remembered by his family as a kind and hardworking individual. The family has expressed gratitude for the support they received during the investigation.
Phil Hanham QPM, the lead investigating officer, said:
“Michal was innocently going about his daily work when his life was cruelly cut short by the selfish actions of another driver. The dash cam footage of Neiland speeding in heavy rain is shocking and demonstrates his total disregard for the safety of others.
Hanham praised the work of the emergency services and investigation team, highlighting the contributions of DC Ian Stevens and PC Rob Giles in securing Neiland’s guilty plea.
