A man who posed as a tradesman to steal from elderly and vulnerable residents in Hythe and Dover has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Stuart McAllister, 61, of Strand Street, Sandwich, committed a series of distraction burglaries between April and June 2024. Claiming to inspect insulation and test for damp, McAllister entered victims’ homes and stole valuable jewellery and other items, some of which he later sold at pawn shops.

Targeting the Vulnerable

Kent Police launched an investigation after multiple victims reported similar crimes in June and July 2024. Detectives uncovered CCTV evidence linking McAllister to the offences. He was arrested on his houseboat, where officers recovered stolen jewellery and collectible coins.

McAllister admitted three counts of burglary at a court hearing in August 2024 and was remanded in custody. On January 10, 2025, Canterbury Crown Court sentenced him to three years in prison.

Police Warning

Detective Chief Inspector Keith Taylor said:
“McAllister presented himself as a reliable and trustworthy tradesman, betraying the trust of his victims to steal items of both monetary and sentimental value. His actions have not only caused distress to those directly affected but also undermined the trust people place in legitimate tradespeople.”

Advice for Residents

Kent Police has urged residents to remain vigilant against doorstep crime and offered the following tips:

  • Ask for ID: Verify it with the company using a phone number you find independently online.
  • Question callers: Legitimate tradespeople will not mind answering your questions.
  • Don’t rush decisions: Schedule a time for the caller to return when you can have a friend or family member present.
  • Stay safe: If you feel threatened, call 999 immediately.

Further Reports

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of McAllister but has not yet reported the incident is encouraged to contact Kent Police through their website, quoting Operation Chedworth.

This sentencing serves as a reminder to remain cautious and safeguard against criminals posing as tradespeople.
