Emergency Services Respond to Potentially Hazardous Substances Incident in Glasgow’s Shettleston Area

A major emergency response is underway in the Shettleston area of Glasgow, following the discovery of “potentially hazardous substances” inside a flat on Altyre Street. Police, paramedics, and firefighters were rapidly deployed to the scene at approximately 7:30 pm on Monday, August 7, as authorities continued to investigate the situation.

As a safety precaution, residents in the vicinity have been evacuated, and several roads, including Altyre Street, Dalness Street, Ard Street, and Trainard Avenue, have been locked down to prevent public access to the area.

At the scene, the bomb disposal unit is actively involved in the investigation, emphasizing the severity of the situation and the need for specialized expertise. However, it remains unclear whether anyone has been injured in the incident.

The Ministry of Defense has also confirmed that an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team is assisting the police and emergency services in dealing with the situation.

Approximately 100 residents have been evacuated from the affected area as a precautionary measure to ensure their safety. They have been directed to a nearby rest centre for temporary accommodation during the ongoing investigation.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that they were alerted to the incident at 5:39 pm on Monday and dispatched HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials) units to the scene. Fire crews continue to remain at the site, ready to respond to any hazardous material-related issues.

Glasgow City Council has been actively involved in assisting the emergency services during this evacuation process. They have estimated that up to 70 residents have been evacuated from several flats in the Shettleston area. An emergency rest centre has been set up at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre to accommodate the displaced residents.

To facilitate the emergency services’ response to the incident, several road closures are in place. Drivers are advised to avoid the affected area if possible, and additional closures may be implemented as the situation unfolds.

As this is an ongoing police incident, authorities are urging the public to stay clear of the area and refrain from speculating on the situation until further updates are provided. The safety and well-being of residents and emergency responders remain the top priority as the investigation progresses.

Authorities will continue to provide updates on the situation as new information becomes available. Members of the public are encouraged to follow the live blog for the latest developments regarding the incident.
