Fatal Street Stabbing Victim Named as Five Arrested

A man who was fatally stabbed during a street altercation in South Yorkshire has been named as 41-year-old Alan Sutton.

Emergency services were called to Burton Road in Monk Bretton, near Barnsley, on Sunday, 1 September, following reports of a violent altercation involving a group of men. South Yorkshire Police confirmed that Mr Sutton died after suffering suspected stab wounds to his chest.

In connection with his death, five people have been arrested. A 19-year-old woman and two men, aged 21 and 32, were arrested on suspicion of murder on Sunday. On Monday, a 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and assault, while an earlier arrest saw a 40-year-old man detained on suspicion of affray, criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon, and assault.

Police have confirmed that the 21-year-old man remains in custody, while the other four individuals have been released on bail pending further investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Ben Wood, leading the investigation, said, “The investigation into Alan Sutton’s death is continuing at pace. We made several arrests within hours of the incident and are keen to hear from anyone with any information that could help our investigation.”

“Our thoughts are with Alan’s family at this difficult time,” he added.

Police are appealing to the public for any information related to the altercation.
