First Picture of Bearsted Couple Killed in Tragic Country Lane Crash Identified as Thomas and Susan Corkery

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the victims of a fatal collision on Thurnham Lane, Bearsted, have been officially named. Thomas Corkery, aged 61, and his wife Susan Corkery, aged 68, lost their lives in a devastating accident while walking their dog on Saturday, January 20th.

The couple, residents of Bearsted village, was struck by a black BMW SUV around 1:40 pm, resulting in fatal injuries for both Mr and Mrs. Corkery, as well as their beloved pet. Thomas Corkery, an accountant originally from Ireland, and Susan Corkery, a retired nurse born in Malta, succumbed to the injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the incident remained at the scene, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash was promptly initiated by law enforcement authorities. Despite ongoing inquiries, no arrests have been made thus far.

An inquest into the tragic incident, held at Oakwood House in Maidstone, shed light on the cause of Mr. Corkery’s death, attributing it to catastrophic head injuries and multiple internal and external blunt and sharp force injuries, all resulting from the fatal road traffic collision.

Assistant Coroner Sarah Clarke presided over the proceedings, confirming the cause of death and adjourning the inquests pending further investigation by the police. A date for the resumption of the inquest has not yet been announced.

Kent Police have appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone who witnessed the collision or possesses relevant information or dashcam footage to come forward. Individuals with pertinent details are encouraged to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Kent Police by calling 01622 798538 or emailing [email protected], quoting reference RY/HG/008/24.

The tragic loss of the Corkery couple has deeply affected the Bearsted community, and authorities are working diligently to ascertain the circumstances of the accident and provide closure to the grieving families.
