A “do not travel” alert has been issued after a freight train derailed on the West Coast Main Line between Carlisle and Oxenholme Lake District. The incident occurred on Wednesday night, causing disruptions to rail services between England and Scotland.

Incident Details

The derailment occurred on a crucial rail route connecting major cities in both countries. National Rail Enquiries confirmed that some lines are blocked, resulting in significant delays and cancellations. Passengers are advised to avoid using train services for journeys between Preston and Scotland on Thursday.

Impact on Services

Train operators Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express have jointly issued the alert, urging travellers to delay their journeys until Friday or consider alternative transportation options. The limited train service that remains operational is expected to experience delays due to the ongoing recovery efforts.

To assist with your journey, you may use your ticket on the following services:

  • TransPennine Express via any reasonable route
  • LNER between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross
  • CrossCountry between Edinburgh and Birmingham New Street
  • ScotRail via any reasonable route

TransPennine Express:

Customers travelling north of Preston are advised NOT to travel.

To assist you with your journey your ticket will be accepted on the following alternatives:

  • Northern between Preston and Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Airport
  • CrossCountry between Edinburgh and York
  • LNER between Edinburgh and York
  • ScotRail between Glasgow and Edinburgh until 12:00 on Thursday.
  • Alternative TransPennine Express services between Edinburgh and Newcastle as well as between Newcastle and Manchester in both directions.
