In a significant milestone for the British Army, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and Ministry of Defence have commenced construction on new Single Living Accommodation (SLA) at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS). The groundbreaking ceremony for the second of two SLA blocks signals a step forward in providing modern and sustainable accommodation for Army personnel undergoing officer training at RMAS.

The SLA project, part of the Army’s broader accommodation programme, is a testament to the commitment to enhancing living standards for military personnel across the estate. The new SLA blocks, designed to accommodate both Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and Other Ranks, will incorporate innovative Modular Methods of Construction (MMC). These methods aim to achieve optimal building energy efficiencies, incorporating features such as photovoltaic panels, air source heat pumps, and a SMART building management system. These advancements not only enhance the green credentials of the buildings but also contribute to reducing utility bills and supporting carbon reduction goals.

The construction contract has been awarded to Reds10, a company known for its expertise in sustainable building solutions. The project’s commencement represents a collaborative effort between the DIO, Reds10, and Army officials to ensure the successful delivery of high-quality infrastructure tailored to meet the needs of Defence personnel.

Neil Hague, Major Programmes and Projects Senior Project Manager at DIO, expressed enthusiasm for the project’s commencement, highlighting its significance in advancing Defence infrastructure delivery. Brigadier Pete Quaite OBE, Head of Infrastructure Plans at Army Basing & Infrastructure, emphasized the benefits of the SLA Programme in providing improved accommodation standards and enhancing the resilience of the estate.
