Independent Investigation Launched After Man Shot by Armed Police in Woking

An independent investigation has been initiated after a man was shot by armed police during an early-morning incident in Woking on Sunday, August 11. The shooting occurred following a reported altercation between two individuals, one of whom was allegedly armed.

Police were called to Nursery Road in Knaphill at 12:36 am after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a weapon. Upon arrival, officers encountered a man in his 20s who was subsequently shot by armed police at the scene. The man was rushed to the hospital, where he is currently in critical but stable condition. His next of kin have been notified.

A weapon has been recovered from the scene, and police have confirmed that the two individuals involved in the altercation were known to each other. Authorities have reassured the public that there is no ongoing risk to the wider community.

In accordance with protocol, Surrey Police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which will oversee the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The police have stated that they will fully cooperate with the IOPC and will not be commenting further on the independent investigation.

Nursery Road has been partially closed, with restricted access for both vehicles and pedestrians. Police are urging residents to avoid the area if possible and have thanked the community for their patience as the investigation continues.

Authorities are also appealing to anyone who may have information related to the incident to come forward. They are particularly interested in hearing from those who may have seen or heard anything between 12:15 am and 1:30 am or who have CCTV, video doorbell, dash cam, or helmet cam footage that could aid the investigation. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact the police, quoting reference number PR/45240091308.
