Dartford councillor Ricky Jones has been suspended from the Labour Party following the emergence of a video showing him making inflammatory remarks during a counter-demonstration in Walthamstow, east London. In the video, Jones can be seen urging a crowd to “cut all their throats and get rid of them” in reference to anti-immigration protesters.
The incident occurred during a protest organized to counter far-right efforts targeting asylum centres and the offices of lawyers assisting asylum seekers. Following his controversial statement, Jones led the crowd in chanting “free, free Palestine.
A Labour Party spokesperson condemned Jones’ actions, stating, “This behaviour is completely unacceptable and it will not be tolerated. The councillor has been suspended from the party.”
The suspension follows a strong reaction from political figures and the public. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage responded to the video on Twitter, tagging the Metropolitan Police and asserting, “This man should be arrested. If not, we know there is two-tier policing.”
The Metropolitan Police have been approached for comment regarding the incident.
The video has sparked significant outrage, with many calling for immediate legal action against Jones. The Labour Party’s swift suspension of the councillor underscores the seriousness with which they are treating the matter, emphasizing their stance against violence and hate speech.
As the situation develops, there is growing scrutiny over the actions of political representatives and their impact on public discourse, particularly in the context of sensitive issues such as immigration and asylum. The Labour Party’s response aims to reinforce its commitment to maintaining respectful and lawful conduct among its members.
