Lewisham Police Bolster Presence Ahead of Potential Protests

Lewisham police are increasing their presence this evening to reassure the public and support local businesses, who have requested this assistance, ahead of potential protests. This heightened presence is also aimed at preventing any criminal activity in the town centre during the night.

The move comes as Lewisham police have announced that they are “aware of plans” circulating on social media for events in Lewisham this evening, which residents will likely find “appalled and worried.

Superintendent Charlene Pavitt commented on the “awful images from across the country this week,” expressing sympathy for all those affected by the “vile instances of racism, thuggery, and violence.” She emphasized the force’s dedication to keeping Lewisham residents safe and preventing any disorder, adding that anyone who intends to attack the community will be arrested.

Violence and attempts to divide the community will not be accepted and will lead to legal action,” Pavitt stated.

Mayor of Lewisham, Brenda Dacres, responded to the police’s statement, saying: “We are aware of rumours circulating about activity this afternoon in Lewisham. We are in constant contact with the Metropolitan Police and are aware of a solidarity rally/counter-protest scheduled to take place in Lewisham town centre this evening. The local police are updating their X (Twitter) account and Facebook with the latest information and reassurance messages.

“To reassure the community, there will be more police officers in Lewisham this evening,” she added.

The police have thanked the residents of Lewisham and the local officers for their efforts to maintain peace and stand against hate. Lewisham Council has also tweeted that it is aware of the planned rally or counter-protest tonight and is working with police to ensure the event remains peaceful.

Superintendent Pavitt reiterated the commitment to community safety: “We’re aware of plans circulating on social media relating to potential events across Lewisham this evening and know many residents will be appalled and worried. We’ve seen awful images from across the country this week and our hearts go out to all those affected by the vile instances of racism, thuggery, and violence.

We are committed to keeping residents safe and preventing disorder this evening, arresting anyone who is intent on attacking our community. Our message to all of those seeking to cause violence and divide our communities is clear – your actions are completely unacceptable and anyone taking part will face the full force of the law.

Local people can expect to see more officers in the area throughout the evening. They will be responding to any concerns and available to speak to residents who may have questions or need help and advice. Thank you to the people of Lewisham and our dedicated team of local officers for showing unity and strength in recent times. I am proud of our community for standing against all abuse and not letting hate divide us.”

A spokesperson for Lewisham Council added: “We are aware of a solidarity rally/counter-protest scheduled to take place in Lewisham town centre this evening and are working with Police to ensure things remain peaceful. There will be more officers in the area and they can speak to residents who might have questions or concerns.”
