London Marathon 2024: How to Defer Your Entry

As anticipation builds for the much-anticipated London Marathon, some participants may face unexpected hurdles that prevent them from participating in this iconic event. Whether it’s due to injury, illness, or simply feeling unprepared, the London Marathon offers a solution for those unable to participate: deferral.

Deferment allows participants to postpone their entry to the following year, ensuring they don’t miss out on the exhilarating experience of the London Marathon. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to defer your entry for the 2024 event:

1. Visit the TCS London Marathon Website: Access the official TCS London Marathon website to access the participant dashboard. This personalised dashboard, typically emailed to participants in February, serves as the hub for managing your registration and race details.

2. Notify the Organizers: Once logged into your participant dashboard, locate the option to withdraw from the race. Follow the prompts to officially withdraw from the 2024 London Marathon.

3. Choose Deferral Option: Upon withdrawal, you’ll be presented with the option to defer your entry to the following year. Select this option if you wish to secure your spot for the 2025 London Marathon.

4. Await Confirmation: After completing the deferral process, expect to receive an email from the marathon organizers with further instructions and details regarding your deferred entry.

Important Information:

  • Withdrawal Deadline: The deadline for withdrawing from the 2024 London Marathon is 23:59 on Saturday, April 20, the day before the race.
  • Eligibility for Deferral: Certain eligibility criteria apply for deferring your entry. Participants who are pregnant or postpartum can defer their place for the following three years (2025, 2026, or 2027). Additionally, those who secure their entry through the ballot or have a guaranteed place from a running club or stakeholder can defer to 2025. However, participants will need to pay the 2025 entry fee to secure their deferred place.
  • Charity Places: Participants who secure their place through a charity cannot defer their entry, as the place belongs to the charity. In such cases, individuals must contact the charity directly to discuss their options.

As the London Marathon approaches, participants facing unforeseen circumstances can take advantage of the deferral option, ensuring they can still be part of this incredible event in the years to come.
