Man Charged with Laptop Thefts Worth Over £15,000 at Bluewater Shopping Centre

In a significant development, a 20-year-old man has been charged following a series of high-value laptop thefts at the Bluewater Shopping Centre. The arrest, which occurred within the bustling retail hub on Wednesday, January 24, was the culmination of a swift operation by local officers in collaboration with the centre’s dedicated security team.

The suspect, identified as Benedict Ashi-Buogwu from Cavendish Road, Rochester, was apprehended shortly after a theft was reported from the Apple store located within the shopping centre. The stolen laptop, part of a haul valued at more than £15,000, was successfully recovered during the arrest.

Ashi-Buogwu faces charges related to a theft incident on January 24, as well as a previous incident at the same Apple store on Tuesday, January 9. In addition to these charges, he is accused of four counts of theft from various stores in London, spanning a period from Wednesday, December 20, 2023, to Sunday, January 21, 2024.

The series of thefts has raised concerns about security measures in retail establishments, prompting a coordinated response from law enforcement and security personnel. The arrest highlights the effectiveness of surveillance and rapid response strategies in curbing retail theft.

Following his charge, Ashi-Buogwu was released on bail and is scheduled to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, February 21. The case has garnered attention due to the high value of the stolen goods and the brazen nature of the thefts.
