Man Charged with Six Counts of Attempted Murder After Setting Fire to Police Officers and Firefighter in Leicester

Ako Faraji, 27, has been charged with six counts of attempted murder following an alarming incident in Leicester where he allegedly set five police officers and a firefighter on fire using a flammable liquid. The harrowing event occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to Leicestershire Police, Ako Faraji threw the flammable liquid at the group, which included a sixth police officer who miraculously avoided being set alight. Prompt action from emergency services quickly extinguished the flames, ensuring that no one sustained injuries.

Faraji, a resident of Oxford Street where the incident transpired, has been charged with arson with intent to endanger life and one count of an offence under Section 24 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. In addition to these charges, he faces one count of theft, which the police have stated is related to a reported offence on the premises of a business in Leicester that occurred on Saturday.

The accused made an appearance at Leicester Magistrates’ Court today. He will remain in custody until his scheduled appearance at Leicester Crown Court on March 25, 2024.

The incident has left the community in shock, and authorities are actively investigating the motives behind Faraji’s alleged actions. The five police officers and the firefighter involved in the incident are expected to make a full recovery, thanks to the swift response and professionalism of the emergency services.

Further details surrounding the case will be disclosed as the investigation progresses.
