Man Sentenced to 10-and-a-half Years for Non-Recent Rape in Swindon

Carl Wallis, a 38-year-old resident of Brookdene in Swindon, has been handed a sentence of 10-and-a-half years in prison for a non-recent rape. The sentencing, which took place today (23/02) at Swindon Crown Court, follows Wallis being found guilty during a three-day trial held in December 2023.

In addition to the prison term, Wallis will be required to register as a sex offender for life and will be subjected to a restraining order concerning the victim.

The conviction stems from an incident in 2016 when Wallis took advantage of his victim while she was unconscious and unresponsive. The assault only came to light six years later when the victim discovered video footage and images on a mobile phone, leading to a revelation that left her feeling shocked and violated.

In a Victim’s Personal Statement, she expressed profound shock and distress upon making the discovery, feeling overwhelmed by a sense of violation and helplessness. She described the impact of the assault as leaving her feeling dirty and humiliated, expressing a sentiment of being unable to escape the trauma inflicted upon her.

Detective Constable Anna McCormack, who led the investigation, commended the victim for her bravery in coming forward and providing crucial evidence during the trial. She emphasized the importance of reporting sexual assaults, urging victims not to suffer in silence and assuring them of the support available from law enforcement and partner organizations.

McCormack encouraged anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault to come forward, highlighting the resources and assistance provided by trained officers and sexual assault referral centres (SARCs). She underscored the significance of victims’ information in bringing offenders to justice and ensuring the safety and well-being of themselves and others in similar situations.

Wiltshire Police provides comprehensive guidance on reporting rape and sexual assault on their website and encourages individuals to reach out for help and support. In emergencies, victims are urged to call 999 for immediate assistance, while those seeking confidential medical aid and advice can visit their local sexual assault referral centre.
