A paedophile swimming teacher, a gang of killers from Erith, and a double murderer are among the south Londoners sentenced to prison last month. Here are the names and faces of those locked up in July 2024.

Seven Men from Erith, Bexley, and Belvedere

Seven men have been jailed for their roles in the murder of 24-year-old Kai McGinley on Pembroke Road, Erith, in February 2023.

Sentences:

  • Bradlee Reeve, 34, Erith: Life imprisonment, minimum 33 years (Murder, Section 18 GBH)
  • Enriko Spahiu, 21, Belvedere: Life imprisonment, minimum 29 years (Murder, Section 18 GBH)
  • Kai Osibodu, 25, Erith: Life imprisonment, minimum 30 years (Murder, Section 18 GBH)
  • Jalees Selby-Gangera, 19, Erith: Nine and a half years (Manslaughter)
  • Connor Brooks, 22, Erith: 12 years (Manslaughter)
  • Charlie Brabon, 19, Erith: Nine years (Manslaughter)
  • Anthony Wallder, 21: Life imprisonment, minimum 29 years (Murder, Section 18 GBH)

Philip Baker

Philip Baker, 63, of Wessex Drive in Erith, strangled his partner until she thought she was going to die. Baker was found guilty of assault and strangulation and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Carl Cooper

Carl Cooper, 66, a handyman from Lewisham, was jailed for life for the murders of Naomi Hunte and Fiona Holm. Cooper was convicted of killing the women he had been in relationships with, with Naomi Hunte’s body being found in her Woolwich flat in 2022, and Fiona Holm’s body still missing.

Michael Drew

Michael Drew, 78, a former swimming coach, was jailed for a further two years and three months for historic sexual abuse of young boys. Drew had previously been jailed in 2001 for similar offences.

Martin McDonagh and Anthony O’Donnell

Martin McDonagh, 35, Beckenham, and Anthony O’Donnell, 34, Sidcup, were among 23 people sentenced after a brawl at a kids’ boxing tournament near Coventry. McDonagh and O’Donnell were involved in the violent disorder and received significant sentences.

James Gathercole

James Arthur George Gathercole, 39, was jailed for two years and eight months for masturbating in front of young women on South London trains. Gathercole targeted women on trains on May 26, 2023.

Jurick Croes, Suvenca Martis, and Raichell Felomina were sentenced for their roles in the murder of Riches Obi in Elephant and Castle. Croes was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years for murder, while Martis and Felomina were jailed for false imprisonment.

Chad Goodall

Chad Goodall, 44, was jailed for 11 years and six months after crashing a stolen car during a police chase, seriously injuring two people. Goodall was also involved in multiple burglaries.

Winston Papalaka

Winston Papalaka, 28, of Harold Road in Crystal Palace, was jailed for four years and six months for burglary. Papalaka entered a house through a dog flap and stole £5,000 worth of items.

Mark Kerwick

Mark Kerwick, 33, of Shrublands Estate in Croydon, was jailed for five years after a police raid at a dry cleaner in Thornton Heath uncovered a gun. Kerwick was also found to be supplying cannabis.

Mohammed Basheeru

Mohammed Basheeru, 44, of London Road in Croydon, was jailed for 12 years after threatening a high street bank cashier in Sydenham with a gun during a robbery.

John Harris Bolton

John Harris Bolton, 38, repeatedly stole from a BP store in Greenwich, taking meat, alcohol, and other products over six months. He was jailed for an additional two weeks after admitting eight more thefts from the same shop.
