Moped Rider Dies After Collision with Police Car in Sutton

A moped rider tragically lost his life following a collision with a marked police car in Sutton yesterday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:45 PM on Wrythe Lane, at the junction with Erskine Road.

Emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service and an Air Ambulance, were dispatched to the scene. Despite their efforts, the male rider of the moped was pronounced dead at the scene. Two police officers involved in the crash were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the moped was not being pursued by officers at the time of the crash, and the police car did not have its blue lights and sirens activated.

Ongoing Investigation

The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed, and a referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing, and Wrythe Lane remains closed while police carry out their investigation.

Official Statement

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: “At approximately 16:45hrs on Monday, 17 June, a marked police car was in collision with a moped in Wrythe Lane, junction with Erskine Road, Sutton. London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended. Despite their best efforts, a male, the rider of the moped, died at the scene. Work is ongoing to identify and inform his next of kin.

Two police officers from the police car were taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries. The moped was not being pursued by the police car at the time of the collision – blue lights and sirens were not in operation. Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing. Road closures remain in place at the location.

Authorities are currently working to identify and inform the moped rider’s next of kin. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
