The National Grid is set to embark on an ambitious £30 billion project to construct thousands of new electricity pylons and miles of cables across Britain. This initiative aims to overhaul the nation’s electrical network in preparation for a shift to green energy, aligning with the government’s net-zero targets.

The extensive project will see the construction of thousands of miles of new cables by 2030. These cables will connect wind farms and power stations to urban areas, addressing the rising demand for electricity as more households adopt electric cars and heat pumps. Demand is projected to increase by 50 per cent by 2035.

Net zero policies are expected to become a significant issue in the upcoming summer General Election. While Labour aims to decarbonise by 2030, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has expressed concerns that a rapid transition could lead to higher energy bills.

National Grid currently owns and operates approximately 21,000 electricity pylons across England and Wales, in addition to 4,500 miles of overhead power lines. The new project will add significantly to this infrastructure, ensuring that the network can handle the future demands of a green economy.

To fund this expansive plan, the company will raise £7 billion from shareholders. The public will also contribute indirectly, as a portion of household energy bills is allocated to the National Grid.

Chief executive John Pettigrew highlighted the urgency and scale of the investment required, stating: “Governments and regulators are moving with increased urgency to attract the levels of investment required to meet their net-zero ambitions.

In addition to the UK investment, National Grid plans to inject another £30 billion into its infrastructure in the United States, where it also owns substantial assets.
