A 37-year-old woman has been sentenced to 16 months in prison following multiple thefts and other offences in South Devon.

Lucy Hanks, of Bitton Park Road, Teignmouth, was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court after pleading guilty to four thefts, breach of a suspended sentence order, breach of a court order, and possession of methadone.

Theft at Tesco Express

The court heard how in March 2024, Hanks breached her bail conditions by entering a Tesco Express store in Teignmouth.

On her first visit, she took 17 bottles of wine, concealed them in two bags, and left without paying. She returned shortly after, wearing the same clothing and carrying the now-empty bags, before stealing another 17 bottles of wine.

The thefts, estimated to be worth over £300, were captured on CCTV.

Repeated Offences

Despite being bailed with conditions not to enter the Tesco Express store, Hanks returned on April 7, selecting food items and again leaving without paying.

Drug Offence

On October 30, 2024, Hanks was arrested at Tesco Extra in Kingsteignton after officers attended a domestic incident. A search revealed she was in possession of methadone without a prescription.

Police Reaction

Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Teignmouth, Robbie Mangham, said:

“Hanks continued to target and steal from the same shop regardless of the conditions imposed upon her. Her crimes affected shop staff and show her to be a persistent and significant shoplifter. We welcome the sentence imposed by the court and it shows that we will continue to crack down on shoplifting within our community.”

Encouragement for Businesses

Police are urging business owners to report incidents of shoplifting online or via 101, or to call 999 in emergencies.

This case highlights the persistent challenges faced by retailers and the authorities’ commitment to tackling repeat offenders.
