A person was treated for smoke inhalation after an e-bike burst into flames at a terraced house on Dunkery Road, Eltham, on Sunday, August 4. The fire, believed to have been caused by a faulty lithium battery in the e-bike, prompted a swift response from the London Fire Brigade.
The incident occurred at 11:39 AM, when the London Fire Brigade received a call about the fire. Three fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus led one person to safety from the first floor of the building. The individual was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews for slight smoke inhalation. Fortunately, two other occupants of the property had already exited before the firefighters arrived.
The e-bike involved in the fire had been purchased second-hand, and investigators believe that a failure in the lithium battery may have been the cause of the blaze.
In light of the incident, the London Fire Brigade has issued a safety warning about the growing fire risks associated with e-bikes and e-scooters in London. A spokesperson for the Brigade emphasized the dangers posed by these vehicles, particularly when they are second-hand or have been modified with parts bought online.
“E-bikes and e-scooters have become London’s fastest-growing fire risk. In 2023, there was a fire, on average, once every two days,” the spokesperson said. E-bikes and e-scooters can be a fun and sustainable way of getting around London, but the stark reality is that some of these vehicles are proving to be incredibly dangerous if they are not used safely.
The spokesperson highlighted the importance of having any modifications or conversions carried out by professionals and ensuring that batteries, chargers, and other components are purchased from reputable sellers. They also noted that products sold through online marketplaces or auction sites may not meet the same safety standards as those sold in high street shops.
The London Fire Brigade has urged e-bike and e-scooter users to follow their top safety tips on how to store and charge these vehicles safely, to prevent further incidents like the one in Eltham.
