Pit Bull Shot and Killed by Armed Gardaí in Cork After Aggressive Incident

A pit bull terrier was shot and killed by armed gardaí (police officers) in Cork after it became aggressive during an incident that unfolded yesterday evening.

The incident occurred at Connolly Road in the Ballyphehane area of the city, shortly after 17:00 local time. Authorities responded swiftly to the scene following reports of a dog attack.

According to witnesses, the dog had injured a woman in the backyard of her home. The woman sustained bites to her arm and leg during the encounter. Another family member attempted to restrain the dog but was also bitten on the arm.

In addition to local police, a dog warden and a veterinarian were dispatched to the house. Recognising the severity of the situation, gardaí requested support from the Garda Armed Support Unit.

After consultations with the dog’s owner and the attending vet, a decision was made to euthanise the dog. A member of the Armed Support Unit discharged their firearm, ending the threat posed by the aggressive animal.

Both individuals who were injured were transported to Cork University Hospital, where they received treatment for soft tissue injuries.
