Police Launch Manhunt After Attempted Rape Incident in Gillingham

A significant police operation is underway in Gillingham as authorities hunt for a man following a reported attempted rape in the early hours of today.

The incident occurred between 1 am and 2 am near the corner of Arden Street and Jeffery Street in Gillingham, where the suspect allegedly approached a woman from behind. The victim promptly reported the incident to the police, triggering a swift response from Kent Police.

The sought-after suspect is described as a black male, with a medium build, and believed to be in his late 30s to early 40s. He was reported to have black hair and a beard and was wearing a black hooded top and trousers at the time of the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Kath Way of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate is leading the investigation. She stated, “Officers are in the area making further inquiries surrounding this incident. We understand that this type of report can cause alarm to residents, but we want to reassure those living in the area that we are working as efficiently as we can to gather all the details and to identify and apprehend the offender.”

Chief Inspector Way also appealed to the community for assistance, saying, “I would like to ask residents with private CCTV or doorbell footage, or drivers with dashcam footage, and who have not yet spoken to officers, to please get in touch.”

Authorities urge anyone with information related to this incident to contact the police at 01634 792209, quoting reference number 46/183127/23. Alternatively, anonymous tips can be submitted to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555111 or by completing an online form on the organization’s website.
