On the evening of 16 March 2023, PC James Taylor, dedicated to his investigation into a dangerous drugs network, and PS Sarah-Jane Tucker, the local police sergeant in the Stroud area, responded to a call involving a violent adult male armed with a knife and a long metal object on the roof of a residential outbuilding.

Remaining composed and patient, PC Taylor skillfully negotiated with the aggressive individual, who posed a significant threat to both officers and the public. Despite the volatile situation, PC Taylor’s calm demeanour and effective communication skills helped prevent the man from escaping the rooftop and endangering others.

As the tense standoff unfolded, PC Taylor meticulously assessed the situation, recognizing the challenges posed by the man’s heavy clothing and limited vulnerability to a Taser deployment. Suddenly, the situation escalated further as the man leapt from the rooftop, brandishing a large knife and a builder’s heavy-duty spirit level. PC Taylor swiftly deployed his Taser, incapacitating the assailant and enabling his subsequent restraint by both officers.
