Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Addresses Controversy Surrounding D-Day Commemorations

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has responded to the recent controversy surrounding his early departure from the D-Day commemorations. In a statement, he emphasised the need to avoid politicising the issue and refocused attention on the sacrifices made by veterans.

Apology and Reflection

Mr. Sunak acknowledged that leaving the D-Day events early was a mistake. “On reflection, that was a mistake, and I apologise” he stated. He urged that despite the scrutiny, the focus should remain on honouring the veterans who gave so much for their country.

Denial of Reports

The Prime Minister denied reports that his team had considered canceling his attendance at the entire event. “That’s simply not right,” he asserted. According to Mr. Sunak, the itinerary for his participation in the D-Day events had been set weeks ago, well before the general election campaign.

Veterans Minister’s Perspective

Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer expressed understanding for the public’s “outrage” over Mr. Sunak’s actions, describing them as a “significant mistake.” However, in a subsequent social media post, Mercer clarified that this incident did not reflect the Prime Minister’s overall commitment to veterans. He praised Mr. Sunak’s work in supporting veterans, emphasising that “no one has done more to facilitate” these efforts.

Judge Me by My Actions

Addressing the criticism, Mr. Sunak urged people to evaluate him based on his actions in supporting the Armed Forces.
