Radio 1 is set to bring back the excitement of its Big Weekend event to Dundee with the first-ever Big Weekend exhibition – Radio 1’s Big Weekend Experience. Hosted at V&A Dundee, the exhibition will run from Friday 1 December to 7 January 2024.
The exhibition aims to delve deep into the highlights of Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2023 in Dundee. It will showcase contributions from local community groups, partners, performers, and Radio 1 listeners who have generously donated their festival memorabilia, photos, and items.
In collaboration with V&A Dundee’s Learning Team, Radio 1 is also creating a virtual version of the exhibition, which will be available online. Additionally, an exhibition audio guide hosted by Greg James and Arielle Free will be accessible on BBC Sounds from 1 December.
To celebrate the launch of Radio 1’s Big Weekend Experience, Arielle Free will be broadcasting live from Dundee on Monday 27 November.
Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, expressed his excitement about the legacy project, saying, “Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2023 was a huge success, generating a tremendous economic boost for Dundee, so it’s incredibly special that we are returning there for this exciting legacy project.”
Leonie Bell, Director of V&A Dundee, expressed delight in partnering with Radio 1, remarking, “V&A Dundee is delighted to be working in partnership with Radio 1 to bring the Big Weekend Experience to life, just six months on from the amazing Big Weekend that was filled with music, fashion, fun, and sun, a highlight for so many in Dundee and across Scotland this summer.”
Bell added that the exhibition aims to be uplifting and joyful, co-created with festival-goers and listeners of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. She hopes it will feel real, relevant, and reflective of the special cultural experience shared during Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2023 in Dundee.
Radio 1’s Big Weekend Experience is part of the BBC’s commitment to providing more content across the UK and getting closer to audiences to better reflect and serve all parts of the country. As part of this strategy, BBC Radio 1 has been broadcasting seven days a week from Salford since 2022 and recently launched a brand-new show from Cardiff.
The exhibition promises to be a free and fun-filled experience, allowing people to relive the magic of Big Weekend Dundee all over again as V&A Dundee concludes its 5th birthday year.
Visitors and fans of Radio 1’s Big Weekend are eagerly anticipating the opening of the exhibition, which will undoubtedly capture the spirit and essence of this iconic event.
