The Food Safety Authority has issued a recall for several Burren Smokehouse Hot Smoked Irish Organic Salmon products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The bacteria, which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness, pose a risk to vulnerable populations.
Recalled Products:
- Burren Smokehouse Smoked Irish Organic Salmon Hot Smoked Over Oak with Spices (500g)
- Burren Smokehouse Burren Smoked Irish Organic Salmon Hot Smoked Over Oak with Honey, Lemon & Pepper (140g and 500g)
Consumers who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them. Retailers are required to remove affected items from sale and display recall notices prominently.
Caterers are also urged to refrain from using the recalled salmon products.
Symptoms and Vulnerable Populations: Listeria monocytogenes infection can manifest as mild flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, it can lead to serious complications. Certain groups are particularly vulnerable to Listeria infections, including pregnant women, infants, and individuals with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly.
The incubation period for Listeria infection averages three weeks but can range from three to 70 days.
The Burren Smokehouse, a well-established business since 1989, is cooperating with authorities to address the situation and ensure consumer safety.
