Two men involved in a violent street fight during recent riots in Leeds city centre have been sentenced to prison by Judge Guy Kearl KC. The incident, which took place amid heightened tensions and public disorder, has led to significant jail terms for the individuals involved.
Sameer Ali, 21, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for affray. Judge Kearl, addressing Ali in court, highlighted the gravity of his actions, stating, “You played a leading role in a group activity, and a large number of people will have been affected by this incident.” The judge detailed how Ali engaged in multiple assaults during the altercation, throwing “full force punches” at multiple individuals, including one who was already being held by others.
Adnan Ghafoor, 31, received a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for affray, which includes a 12-month term for breaching a previously suspended sentence. Judge Kearl remarked on Ghafoor’s involvement, noting, “You acted in concert with the others, and therefore you are jointly responsible, albeit that you played a slightly reduced role.
The court heard that the violence erupted during a brief but intense confrontation, lasting approximately 30 seconds, in which punches, kicks, and even a missile were thrown. Judge Kearl emphasized the impact of the incident on onlookers, who were left “shocked, fearful, upset, and distressed” by the actions of the rioters.
Addressing the seriousness of the crime, Judge Kearl stated, “The law applies to everyone, no matter what colour, race, religion, or political persuasion; there is no distinction.” He condemned the unlawful violence used by the defendants and underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law.
The sentences handed down are intended to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider engaging in similar acts of violence, particularly in a public setting where the safety of the community is at risk.
This sentencing is part of a broader effort by the judiciary to address the recent surge in public disorder and ensure that those responsible for such actions are held accountable. The convictions of Ali and Ghafoor send a clear message that violent behaviour, particularly during times of civil unrest, will not be tolerated.
