A man from Birmingham has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for multiple rapes against a woman and the historic rape and sexual abuse of two children. Marcus Newton, 27, from Aston, was convicted following a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court on July 26.
West Midlands Police revealed that Newton’s heinous crimes came to light after his three courageous victims came forward. Newton was found guilty of two charges of raping a child under 13, one charge of sexually assaulting a child under 13, and three charges of rape.
Victims’ Brave Testimonies
The first victim contacted the police to report being raped by Newton. This victim disclosed the significant impact Newton’s actions had on his mental health, with the abuse occurring when he was a young boy.
Following this, two more victims came forward. One was a woman who reported being raped by Newton in 2018 and 2019. The other was a woman who revealed she had been raped by Newton over a four-year period while she was still a child. Police were able to corroborate her story by analyzing footage, messages, and pictures on her phone sent by Newton.
Sentencing and Consequences
In addition to his 21-year prison sentence, Newton has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. Detective Sergeant Sareena Puri from the Adult Investigation Team expressed satisfaction with the sentence, emphasizing its importance in sending a clear message about the consequences of such appalling behavior.
“Newton is a sexual predator who raped and sexually abused his vulnerable victims. Two of them were under the age of 13 at the time,” said Detective Sergeant Puri. “We are pleased with the sentence which sends out a clear message that people who behave in this appalling way will be caught and will spend many years behind bars.”
Acknowledging Victims’ Courage
Detective Sergeant Puri commended the bravery of the three victims for coming forward and providing evidence in court. “I would like to praise the courage of his three victims who came forward to tell us what he had done. Their bravery in giving evidence in court has to be commended,” she said. “Newton has shown no signs of remorse for what he has done and for the impact his offending has had on the lives of his three victims.”
She also expressed hope that their courage would encourage others who have been subjected to sexual abuse and rape to come forward. “We are here to help and listen,” she added.
Support and Resources
West Midlands Police encourage anyone who has experienced sexual abuse or rape to reach out for support. The police force is dedicated to listening to victims and ensuring that justice is served.
