Strongest Earthquakes in Decades Rattle Naples Region, Panicking Residents

The strongest earthquakes in decades were recorded at the volcanic caldera near Naples on Monday night, sending residents into the streets in panic. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported that a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck shortly after 8 PM (6pm GMT) on Monday evening 20th May 2024 at a depth of 1.6 miles. This significant quake was preceded by a 3.5-magnitude tremor and followed by dozens of aftershocks.

Emergency services reported structural damage, including cracks and falling debris. Amateur video from a supermarket in Pozzuoli showed bottles scattered across the floor after being shaken off shelves. The Campi Flegrei, also known as the Phlegraean Fields, experienced approximately 150 earthquakes between 7:51 PM on Monday and 12:31 AM on Tuesday, according to INGV. Mauro Di Vito, a representative of the institute, stated, “This is the most powerful seismic swarm in the last 40 years.”

In response to the crisis, Campania’s civil protection set up a tensile structure at the port of Pozzuoli for residents who are afraid to return to their homes. Concerned citizens gathered in safe areas along the seafront between Naples and Pozzuoli, seeking refuge from the ongoing tremors.

The Campi Flegrei volcano, a supervolcano situated between Pozzuoli and Naples, has become more susceptible to rupturing, making an eruption more likely according to experts. Formed 39,000 years ago in a massive eruption, Campi Flegrei’s last eruption was in 1538. The region is also home to Mount Vesuvius, infamous for its eruption over 2,000 years ago that buried Pompeii and other Roman settlements.

Following the earthquakes, schools in Pozzuoli will remain closed on Tuesday, and temporary accommodation has been provided for frightened residents, announced Mayor Luigi Manzoni on Facebook. The INGV continues to monitor the caldera, warning that further seismic events of similar magnitude cannot be ruled out.

Residents are living in a state of heightened anxiety. We have to live with fear all the time,” a Pozzuoli resident told Rainews. “How long will the buildings be able to hold out while experiencing all these shocks? That’s what we wonder.”

Despite the fear, specialists maintain that a full-blown eruption in the near future remains unlikely. The Campi Flegrei has been a source of concern due to its historical activity and recent resurgence linked to gas emissions from magma.
