Sunak and Starmer Clash in First 2024 General Election Debate

In a fiery head-to-head debate, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer sparred over critical voter issues, including the economy and healthcare. The hour-long ITV program, titled “Sunak v Starmer: The ITV Debate,” provided a platform for the leaders to present their visions for Britain.

Economic Policies and Taxes

Sunak kicked off the debate by defending his economic policies, citing falling inflation and his record as chancellor. He claimed that his plan to tackle the cost-of-living crisis was effective, emphasising the success of initiatives like the furlough scheme. However, he repeatedly warned of “£2,000 higher taxes for every working family” under a Labour government.

Sir Keir swiftly dismissed this claim, labelling it “absolute garbage.” Full Fact, an independent fact-checking organisation, confirmed that Sunak’s figure was based on Conservative estimates of Labour’s spending plans. The debate also revealed that neither leader intended to raise income tax, national insurance, or VAT.

NHS Waiting Lists

When questioned about the NHS, Sunak faced scrutiny over waiting lists. Sir Keir pointed out that more people were awaiting routine hospital treatment now than when Sunak first made his pledge to reduce waiting lists. The exchange highlighted the challenges facing the healthcare system and the need for effective solutions.

Royal College of Nursing Criticism

The Royal College of Nursing criticised Sunak after he claimed that the nursing strike was over. The College clarified that no NHS pay settlement had been reached, and members remained in dispute. They called for direct negotiations on nursing pay during the summer, regardless of which party forms the next government.

YouGov Poll Results

A snap YouGov poll showed Sunak slightly ahead, with 51% favouring him over Starmer’s 49%. The question posed was: “Who performed best overall in tonight’s debate?”

As the campaign intensifies, voters will closely watch how both leaders address these critical issues in the run-up to the 2024 General Election
