Two Devon Men Jailed for Brutal Assault Outside Newton Abbot Pub

Two men from Devon have been sentenced to prison for a brutal assault on a stranger outside a Newton Abbot pub in July 2021. Kai Webb, 27, of Teignmouth, and Lewis Botfield, 26, of Kingsteignton, both pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm during a hearing at Exeter Crown Court.

Judge Stephen Climie delivered the sentences, handing Webb a 43-month prison term, while Botfield was sentenced to 15 months behind bars. Webb’s sentence was extended due to additional charges of possessing a bladed article and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in an unrelated incident.

The court heard that the assault took place outside a pub in Newton Abbot, where the two men attacked a stranger in an unprovoked and vicious manner. The victim sustained serious injuries as a result of the assault, leading to grievous bodily harm charges against both Webb and Botfield.

Judge Climie, in his sentencing remarks, emphasized the severity of the attack and the need for a custodial sentence to reflect the harm caused and to deter similar acts of violence. The additional time added to Webb’s sentence was a result of his involvement in another violent incident, further underscoring his dangerous behaviour.

Both men will serve their sentences in prison, with Webb facing a longer term due to his previous criminal actions. The case highlights the serious consequences of violent behaviour and the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring that those who commit such offences are held accountable
