UN Security Council Adopts US-Proposed Resolution for Permanent Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Release

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, the United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution proposed by the United States, calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages. The resolution saw overwhelming support, passing with 14 votes in favour and one abstention by Russia.

The adoption of this resolution marks a pivotal step in the international community’s efforts to address the escalating conflict in Gaza. The United States, backed by other world leaders, has been a strong proponent of ending hostilities and ensuring the safety of civilians and hostages.

In Jerusalem, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, conveying the commitment of the US and other nations to the ceasefire proposal. According to the US State Department, Blinken assured Netanyahu of the international community’s support in implementing and maintaining the ceasefire.

The resolution’s passage comes at a time of political upheaval in Israel. On Tuesday, Blinken is scheduled to meet with Benny Gantz, who resigned from the Israeli war cabinet on Sunday. Gantz’s resignation followed his sharp criticism of Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict in Gaza, reflecting internal dissent and the complex dynamics within Israel’s political and military leadership.

This development is seen as a crucial opportunity to halt the violence that has caused widespread devastation and suffering in Gaza. The resolution’s emphasis on the immediate release of hostages underscores the urgent need to address humanitarian concerns amidst the ongoing conflict.

As the international community rallies behind this ceasefire resolution, the focus now shifts to its implementation and the long-term prospects for peace and stability in the region. The commitment of all parties involved will be critical in ensuring that this diplomatic effort translates into lasting peace for the people of Gaza and Israel.
