Two unarmed police officers have been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024 for their selfless and courageous actions in confronting an armed assailant during a tragic incident in Plymouth.

On August 12, 2021, Devon and Cornwall Police received reports of an active gunman in the Keyham area of Plymouth. Roads policing officers, PCs Zac Printer and an anonymous officer rushed to the scene to assist, unarmed but ready to act.

Upon arrival, they were alerted by members of the public to a victim, Kate Shepherd, who had been shot at point-blank range by the offender. Without hesitation, both officers immediately began administering first aid to the injured victim.

However, their attention was soon drawn to shouts indicating that the gunman had returned to the area. Realizing the imminent danger to the public, PCs Printer and the other officer made a split-second decision to confront the armed assailant.

Shouting commands to the gunman, they bravely drew his attention away from potential further victims, putting themselves at great risk. As they approached, the assailant tragically took his own life with his weapon.

Despite the harrowing scene before them, both officers quickly resumed their efforts to aid the injured victim, continuing first aid and CPR until paramedics and a doctor arrived. They also volunteered to escort the victim’s family to the hospital, displaying remarkable compassion in the face of adversity.

The bravery and selflessness displayed by PCs Printer and the other officer on that fateful day undoubtedly saved lives and prevented further harm to the community. Their dedication to duty and unwavering courage exemplify the highest ideals of the police service.

Devon and Cornwall Police Federation Chair Nick Jones praised the officers for their incredible bravery and commitment to protecting the public, emphasizing their selflessness in confronting the gunman.
