Van Driver Admits Causing Death of Rugby Coach in Eltham Crash

A van driver has admitted causing the death of a beloved rugby coach in a crash that occurred in Eltham last year.

Incident Details

Brian Rayner, 57, was tragically killed in a crash on Rochester Way on the morning of March 2, 2022. Last Wednesday (July 31), Christopher Challen, 37, of High Street in Sittingbourne, appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court where he admitted to causing Brian’s death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

Court Proceedings

Challen will be sentenced at the Old Bailey, with a date yet to be fixed. The admission of guilt brings some closure to a case that has deeply affected the local community.

Tributes to Brian Rayner

At the time of his death, Brian Rayner was remembered as a “well-respected and loved rugby coach and player” at Gravesend Rugby Football Club. His son, Aaron, shared: “He was a family man first and was always helping anyone he could. There is a lot I could say about him.”

The collision took place around 6:30am, and despite the best efforts of emergency responders, Brian was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:16am.
