Warning Issued Over TikTok Scam Promoting Fake £750 Tesco Voucher

A warning has been issued to the public after an apparent scam circulating on TikTok has been found to be promoting a fake £750 Tesco voucher.

The Scam

The scam involves posts claiming to be from disgruntled former Tesco staff members, urging users to visit a website called TesOffer.com to claim a free £750 voucher. However, investigations have shown that this offer is not genuine and is likely a phishing attempt designed to steal personal information.

Spotting Fake Offers

Similar scams have been prevalent on social media platforms. Here are some tips to help you identify fake offers:

  1. Verify the Source: Genuine pages will have a verified blue tick badge on platforms like Facebook and Twitter. The fake pages often lack this verification.
  2. Check the Language: Posts associated with scams are often poorly written with grammatical errors.
  3. Avoid Suspicious Links: Scammers frequently ask users to comment and share the post, and then provide a link to a dubious website. Be cautious of any site that asks for personal or financial details.

Tesco’s Response

A Tesco spokesperson told Which?: “Tesco UK only has one Facebook page – facebook.com/Tesco. Any other page is potentially a scam, and social media users should not click on them.

The company confirmed that it has reported the fraudulent page and emphasized that it does not run free voucher competitions on Facebook or other social media platforms. Tesco’s social media scams page provides tips on how to spot and avoid scams online.

Reporting Social Media Scams

If you come across suspicious posts on Facebook or any other social media platform, you should:

  • Click on the top right-hand corner of the post and select ‘Report post.’
  • Contact your bank immediately if you think you have given away personal or financial details.
  • Report the scam to Action Fraud or the police if you reside in Scotland.

If you have lost money to a scam and are not refunded by your bank, you can escalate a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Public Awareness

Authorities and consumer protection agencies are urging the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity. Sharing information about these scams can help protect others from falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
