Police Scotland was made aware of a woman having been assaulted on King Street in Stirling shortly after 8.20pm on Saturday, 3 August.
The 21-year-old woman was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital for treatment to a stab wound. Her injury is not described as life-threatening.
No one else was injured and enquiries are ongoing.
Inspector Phil McIntosh said: “We are aware of speculation and false information circulating on social media regarding this incident.
“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I would urge people not to add to this speculation online.
“We are aware of the impact this incident has had in the local area and can reassure people that considerable efforts are being made to identify the man involved.
“I would urge anyone with information which could help our investigation to come forward by calling 101, quoting reference 3563 of 3 August, 2024.”
