Woman Jailed for Robbing Elderly Man, Leaving Him with Fractured Hip

A woman has been sentenced to over three years in prison for robbing an elderly man, leaving him with a fractured hip.

Jody Ainsworth, 33, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to three years and four months imprisonment after pleading guilty to robbing an 81-year-old man. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 12, as the victim was withdrawing cash in Farnworth, Bolton.

Court Proceedings

Bolton Crown Court heard that the victim had taken a taxi to the Post Office Pub on Market Street around 1:20 PM. After spending a couple of hours at the pub, he visited a local bookmakers before heading to a cash machine to withdraw £250.

CCTV Evidence

Reviewing CCTV footage from a nearby shop, police observed the victim at the cash machine around 4 PM, with two women standing behind him. Ainsworth was seen moving closer to the elderly man before grabbing the money he had just withdrawn.

Struggle and Injury

A struggle ensued, causing both Ainsworth and the victim to fall to the ground. The 81-year-old man sustained a fractured right hip and a cut to his hand. Ainsworth fled the scene, leaving the injured man on the ground. He was later taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital, where he required surgery for his hip injury.

Police Statement

PC Georgia Ascroft of Bolton Police expressed satisfaction with the sentencing:

“We are pleased with today’s result, which has seen a dangerous individual taken off the streets. Robbery and theft remain a priority for Greater Manchester Police, and we will investigate every report that comes in, with a view to locating, apprehending, and charging individuals who think they have the right to take from others without their consent.

PC Ascroft also encouraged victims of similar crimes to come forward, assuring them of a thorough investigation.
