A tragic incident resulting from reckless driving has led to a young woman being sentenced to prison after causing the death of another and seriously injuring two others.
Molly Mycroft, 21, (pictured in the first image) of Ivanhoe Road, stood before Sheffield Crown Court on Friday, February 23rd, for sentencing after pleading guilty to causing the death of 20-year-old Sarah Oliver by dangerous driving and seriously injuring two passengers.
The court heard that on August 2, 2022, Mycroft was driving her Seat Ibiza along Wheatley Hall Road in Doncaster, exceeding the 40mph speed limit. Ignoring a red light signal, she collided with a BMW in which Sarah Oliver was a passenger.
Sarah’s family, devastated by their loss, expressed their profound grief and shared a heartfelt tribute in memory of her. They described Sarah as a radiant young woman with her whole life ahead of her, who had a remarkable ability to light up a room. They highlighted her love for family and friends, her excitement for plans, and the tragic timing of her passing, just days before her 21st birthday.
“No family should have to go through what we have endured,” they said, emphasizing the profound impact of Mycroft’s selfish actions.
In a statement to law enforcement, Sarah’s family urged others to consider the devastating consequences of speeding and distracted driving on the lives of innocent road users and emphasized the preciousness of life.
As a result of her actions, Mycroft was sentenced to a total of nine years in prison. This included a nine-year sentence for causing Sarah Oliver’s death and six years for causing serious injuries to two other individuals. These sentences will run concurrently. Additionally, Mycroft was disqualified from driving for 16 years.
The sentencing serves as a sobering reminder of the severe consequences of dangerous driving behaviours, underscoring the importance of responsible and attentive driving to ensure the safety of all road users.
