Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that two Russian ballistic missiles hit the eastern Ukrainian city of Poltava earlier today, causing significant destruction and casualties.
In a video statement, President Zelensky revealed that the missiles struck the area surrounding an educational institution and a nearby hospital, partially destroying one of the buildings at the Institute of Communications.
Preliminary reports indicate that at least 41 people have been killed, and 180 others have been injured. Rescue operations are ongoing, with several individuals successfully pulled from the rubble.
Zelensky condemned the attack, stating, “These brutal strikes targeted civilians and essential infrastructure, further showcasing the relentless aggression faced by Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian government has called for increased international support as they continue to defend against continued Russian military aggression.
This incident marks one of the deadliest single attacks in recent months as the war between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate. More updates are expected as rescue efforts continue in Poltava.
