Chaos erupted at the Grand Plaza Hotel in Central London in the early hours of Sunday after staff and guests were rushed out following a strong gas smell. The alarm was raised when a heavy odour was traced to the hotel’s boiler room at the 76-bedroom Lexham Garden complex.
Firefighters battle toxic gas leak
London Fire Brigade crews scrambled to the scene just before 3am after gas alarms sounded. Using specialised detection units, firefighters confirmed a large quantity of poisonous gas was escaping from the boiler room. Firefighters donned gas-tight suits and entered the hazardous area to contain the leak.
Specialist units and road closures in place
Specialist detection, identification, and monitoring teams joined the operation to assist commanders onsite. Meanwhile, authorities have shut roads near the hotel and urged drivers to find alternative routes while the emergency unfolds.
